What the CEO wants you to know - Ram Charan

Ram Charan, the author, grew up in India where his family owned a shoe store. The lessons that are being taught in this book are those that the author started learning during his work (apprenticeship) in the family store, through assignments at various companies and business school.

The book is a quick read, and teaches the language of business really clearly. The concepts explained are what CEOs of companies pay attention to and what they use to make companies profitable. Reading this book has given me an insight into the minds of corporate raiders and CEOs who seem to be in the news for a lot of merger/acquisition deals with nothing happening after.

Of course, I was expecting at least a few anecdotes from the authors formative years. They would have livened up the book and given it a more human touch. Explaining the concepts in terms of the little shoe store would have made it a lot more useful to the small business owner, or those of us contemplating a change of pace: the book feels like it is written for the middle manager/employee in a big business.

Recommended only if you want to appear knowledgeable and flummox your friends with your deep financial knowledge.
