Going to church today was fun and enlightening. I'd forgotten about wedding banns.

They read these right after communion, before the final blessing. And this time around, the first few were with both the parties with very Catholic names. Except the last: the man was Catholic from Santa Cruz. The woman had a very obviously Hindu name. When I heard that, inside I was going "yes! yes! finally!", since the last inter-religious wedding I went to (or more accurately, performed for, back when I used to play the organ for the church choir) here in Goa, the parish priest then had refused to read the banns. But, he did let them have a Catholic ceremony in church, so I don't remember what his objection to reading the bann was.

On second thoughts, it may have been a patriarchal thing and the banns were not read because the man was not a Catholic.
